Conrad Weidmann (born October 10, 1847 in Diessenhofen am Rhein, Switzerland; † August 17, 1904 in Lübeck ) was a German painter , draftsman , art and colonial writer , and war reporter in the so-called Arab uprising.

Life

Weidmann received his school education in Zurich before traveling through Germany, France and Italy from 1864. In 1872 he settled in the Free and Hanseatic City of Lübeck and became a German citizen. In 1882 he created a series of drawings that dealt with the development of Lübeck's architectural history and was published under the title Lübeck Historical Album . For this work he received an award from the Prussian Ministry of Culture . Weidmann made some drawings for the magazine Fliegende Blätter and in 1889, with the permission of the Foreign Office, also took over the illustrations and reporting for Hermann Wissmann's planned East Africa expedition for the Leipziger Illustrirte Zeitung , the Hamburger Nachrichten and other newspapers.

As a companion of Wissmann, Weidmann took part in some skirmishes as well as on the side of Karl von Gravenreuth in marching movements on the coasts of Muoa via Tanga, Pangani, Mquadja, Saadani to Bagamoyo and Dar es Salaam. The expeditions to Dunda, Yombo, the Kingani-Wami-Delta and other places in the area took him further. He was also present at the battle at Palamaka and the capture of Kiloa, Lindi and Mikindani in 1890. In the year and a half that he spent there, around 50 drawings with accompanying texts for the illustrated magazine and further reports for the other papers came together. But the stresses and strains of traveling and the climate had damaged his health and he returned home in September 1890.

He remained connected to the colonial movement and in 1890 published an album with portraits of the participants in the expedition under the title Major von Wissmann and his officers and in 1894 the Lexicon German Men in Africa . The Grand Duke of Weimar awarded him the White Falcon Order for this . Weidmann tried to promote the cause of the German colonies through numerous lectures and speeches . He was highly respected in colonial society , especially in the Lübeck department. When the main board elected him to be a member, Duke Johann Albrecht von Mecklenburg sent him his picture. For more than ten years until his death he was the first secretary of the board.

In addition to the colonial society , the Pan-German Association and the non-profit society , he also worked for the Lübeckische Blätter . For years he has been reporting, for the last time in the issue before his obituary, about the works of art exhibited in Nöhring's salon. He did this by recognizing the talent of the younger generation - including some Lübeckers - and accompanying the art changes with understanding.

Weidmann died of a lung disease.
