Fakara is a rural municipality in the department boboye department in Niger .

The rural community is located at the transition from the Sahel zone to the greater Sudan landscape and is located in the dry Fakara plain above the Niger River , which it does not, however, directly border. The neighboring communities are Kouré in the north, N'Gonga in the northeast, Birni N'Gaouré in the southeast, Fabidji in the south and Kirtachi in the west. The municipality is divided into 14 administrative villages, four traditional villages and nine hamlets. The main town of the rural community is the village of Kobodey (also: Kobedey).

history

In the 19th century, the Zarma settlement of Fakara was able to maintain relative autonomy from its powerful neighbor Dosso and its ruler, the Zarmakoye. The rural community of Fakara was created in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform from the north-western part of the canton of Birni N'Gaouré / Boboye.

At the 2001 census, Fakara had 11,796 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 19,077.

Economy and Infrastructure

The community is located in a zone where rain-fed agriculture is practiced. National Road 1 runs through Fakara and is part of the international Dakar-N'Djamena Highway . In the main town of Kobodey there is a small hospital run by the German association Fakara-Nigerhilfe Deutschland e. V. is supported.
