Kiota is a rural municipality in the department boboye department in Niger .

geography

Kiota is located at the transition from the Sahel to the greater Sudan landscape on Wadi Dallol Bosso . There is a high risk of flooding. The neighboring communities are Koygolo in the north, Garankédey in the east, Birni N'Gaouré and N'Gonga in the south and Harikanassou in the west. The municipality is divided into 31 administrative villages, 17 traditional villages, five hamlets and a camp. The main town of the rural community is Kiota, consisting of the administrative villages of Kiota Mayaki Windi Béri, Kiota Oumarou and Kiota Oumarou Peulh.

history

According to tradition, Kiota was founded by Ali Koda, son of Tagorou Ganna. Around 1800 the Zarma settlement was burned down by hostile Hausa . The Zarma then carried out a counterstrike and defeated the Hausa at Matankari . Kiota was also able to maintain a relative autonomy vis-à-vis its powerful neighbor Dosso . In the 19th century the population was Islamized . The rural community of Kiota emerged as an administrative unit in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform from the eastern part of the canton of Harikanassou / Kiota.

At the 2001 census, Kiota had 19,503 residents. At the 2012 census, the population was 25,282. The most important ethnic groups in the municipality include Zarma, Hausa, Fulbe , Tuareg and Gourmantché .

Culture and sights

Kiota is an important center of Sufism . A religious head of a Tijani order has his seat here. The order in Kiota is linked to the Tijani order of Ibrahim Baye Niass in Kaolack . The annual Mouloud celebrations in honor of the Prophet Mohammed are known far beyond the borders of the community.

Economy and Infrastructure

The community is located in a zone where rain-fed agriculture is practiced. The village of Kiota Mayaki Windi Béri has a community radio station and the only medicine depot in the rural community area. Around 79% of Kiota's residents have no access to clean drinking water.
