Harikanassou is a rural municipality in the department boboye department in Niger .

geography

Harikanassou is located at the transition from the Sahel to the greater Sudan landscape . The neighboring communities are Koygolo in the north, Kiota in the east, N'Gonga in the south, Kouré in the southwest and Dantchandou in the northwest. The municipality is divided into 36 administrative villages, 14 traditional villages and eight hamlets. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village of Harikanassou.

In the dry season, the last wild population of West African giraffes migrates from Kouré to the Harikanassou area.

history

The rural community of Harikanassou emerged as an administrative unit in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform in the western part of the canton of Harikanassou / Kiota.

population

At the 2001 census, Harikanassou had 19,976 residents. At the 2012 census, the population was 23,567. Harikanassou is mainly inhabited by the Zarma ethnic group .

Economy and Infrastructure

Due to its location in the valley of the Dallol Bosso , the water table is only a few meters below the surface, which enables the creation of irrigated vegetable gardens. These are cultivated by the women of the community who grow salads, beans, pumpkins, onions and tomatoes there. Many of the male residents, on the other hand, go to the city or to neighboring Nigeria in the dry season to find work.
