Tamou is a rural municipality in the department Say in Niger .

geography

Tamou is located in the northern part of the Sudan landscape . The municipality is divided into 113 villages and 120 hamlets. The main town of the rural community is Tamou village.

Tamou borders the neighboring state of Burkina Faso in the southwest . The neighboring communities in Niger are Say in the north, Kirtachi in the east and Ouro Guélédjo in the west. Tamou is located on the Niger River . The municipality crosses the Niger tributaries Diamangou , Mékrou and Tapoa . Large parts of the municipality are taken up by the W National Park and the Tamou Game Reserve .

history

The German Africa explorer Heinrich Barth visited the area in 1854, the inhabitants of which owned a large number of horses and which he therefore described as extraordinarily wealthy. Barth mentioned Ouro Mobido ("court of the learned nobleman"), today a village in the municipality of Tamou, as the residence of a wealthy landowner.

The French colonial administration established a canton in Tamou at the beginning of the 20th century , the territory of which was gradually expanded to include dissolved cantons: Ouérésouldou and Nani Fonou, and most recently in 1932 Tiala and Diongoré. In 2002, as part of a nationwide administrative reform, the canton Tamou became the rural community of Tamou.

population

At the 2012 census, Tamou had 89,782 residents. The population at the 2001 census was 52,917. Tamou is located in an area populated by the Gourmantché ethnic group , whereby the Gourmantché only make up 2% of the total population in the entire Tillabéri region.

Economy and Infrastructure

The community is located in a rain-fed zone and is affected by violent land use conflicts.

The Thursday market in the main town is medium-sized compared to other weekly markets in the municipality. Blacksmiths also work here, and bicycle repairers offer their services. More important are the large weekly markets in the villages of Alambaré (Allambaré), Bokki and Guémé, which also attract traders from the capital Niamey . At the Saturday market in Alambaré, groceries, colored aprons from Burkina Faso as well as pieces of silver and tinplate are traded that Fulbe women use for make-up. The weekly market in Guémé always starts on Tuesday at night and ends the following day. Commercial goods include soda from Boboye , mats from the Fulbe villages around Kirtachi and Tillabéri , unadorned calabashes , oil made by women from kirtachi, and mats made of raw leather that are used for fencing called tatara . Sweet potatoes, tomatoes and onions grown by the local population by the river are also sold. Various foods are also offered at the Wednesday market in Bokki. The peanuts sold are processed locally into peanut oil . Craftsmen such as blacksmiths and potters come to the market from the area around Bokki. Smaller weekly markets in the rural community of Tamou are located in the border villages of Boulel and Dantiandou (not to be confused with the rural community of Dantiandou further north ). Both take place on Mondays.

At the village of La Tapoa in the municipality of Tamou there is a civil airport with an unpaved runway, La Tapoa Airport ( ICAO code : DRRP). The national road 27 connects Tamou with the departmental capital Say. The Tapoa Dam, built in 1975, dams the Tapoa River.
