Diouldé Laya

Diouldé Laya (* 1937 in Tamou ; † 27. July 2014 ; also Djouldé Laya and Juulde Layya ) was a Nigerien sociologist .

Life

Diouldé Laya went to primary schools in Say and Kollo before he attended the Lycée Askia Mohamed in Bamako from 1950 to 1957 . From 1957 to 1967 he studied at Dakar University . There he received a license ès lettres in sociology in 1962 and a Diplôme d'études supérieures in sociology in 1967 . Laya was politically active in Senegal in the communist party Parti africain de l'indépendance and toured the People's Republic of China at the time of Mao Zedong's rule .

As early as 1962 he was Secretary General of the Nigerien UNESCO Commission. He held this position until 1970. From 1964 to 1964 he was also an editor at the Encyclopedia Africana . Laya worked from 1970 to 1977 as director of the Research Institute of Human Sciences at Niamey University . In 1974 he published an ethnological dissertation at the University of Paris-Nanterre . From 1977 to 1997 he was director of the Center d'Etudes Linguistiques et Historiques par Tradition Orale of the Organization for African Unity .

Laya was married and the father of eight children. He retired in 1998. He died in 2014 and was buried in Niamey .

Diouldé Laya's research activities extended to sociology as well as other disciplines such as ethnology, psychopathology and linguistics . As a theorist, he dealt with the use of oral traditions in the social sciences . In this regard, Laya published works on the collection, transcription and translation of oral traditions in the Nigerian languages , particularly in Songhai-Zarma , Hausa and Fulfulde . Laya worked with Boubou Hama and André Salifou from Niger and Georges Balandier and Louis-Vincent Thomas from France.
