Georges Balandier (born December 21, 1920 in Aillevillers-et-Lyaumont , Haute-Saône , † October 5, 2016 in Paris ) was a French sociologist , ethnologist and anthropologist .

Life

After studying philosophy and the Second World War , Balandier worked for the French government and in this capacity often traveled to their colonies . Shaken by the social misery he found there, he turned to ethnology . From 1955 he published his first research on African societies. Together with Alfred Sauvy , he developed the concept of the Third World in 1956 (based on the “third estate” of the French Revolution).

Balandier was Professor Emeritus of the Sorbonne and Research Director of the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). In 1976 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society . He was holder of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques .
