Jacques Maquet

Jacques Jérôme Pierre Maquet (born August 4, 1919 in Brussels , † January 18, 2013 in Los Angeles , California ) was a Belgian anthropologist and Africanist . His specialty was the ethnography of Rwanda .

Live and act

Maquet first studied law and philosophy . The subject of his doctoral thesis was the sociology of knowledge . He studied at the Universities of Leuven and London , where he received his doctorate in 1952 , and at Harvard University .

Before the African states achieved independence, Maquet lived in Africa for ten years. He was director of a sociological research center in the African Great Lakes area and later held a professorship at a university in Central Africa.

After his return from Africa, he resumed his research and lectures in sociology at the universities of Paris and Brussels and later in the United States , where he taught at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

Jacques Maquet died January 18, 2013 in California at the age of 93.
