Herbert Ganslmayr
Herbert Ganslmayr , also Herbert Ganslmayer , (* 1937 ; † April 27, 1991 in Athens ) was a German ethnologist . From 1975 to 1990 he was director of the Überseemuseum in Bremen . Ganslmayr died during a UNESCO conference that dealt with the return of stolen cultural property to the countries of origin.
Life
Ganslmayr studied pedagogy, ethnology , Egyptology and ancient history in Munich and Basel . After receiving his doctorate in 1965, he worked as a lecturer in social anthropology at the University of Munich and conducted field studies in southern Nigeria . After working as a curator at the Bremen Überseemuseum, he was appointed director there in 1975.
In the International Committee for Museums of Ethnography (ICME), a sub-organization of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), Gansmyr held various prominent positions, including as chairman of the ICME from 1974 to 1980 and from 1986 until his death. Among other things, he was Chairman of the Advisory Committee at ICOM from 1980 to 1986.
Herbert Ganslmayr advocated an active role for ethnological museums (ethnological museums) in today's development of countries in the southern hemisphere. At the same time, he envisaged the task of the ethnographic museums in the industrialized countries to provide information about the current situation in the developing countries. The Bremen Überseemuseum got involved in this direction under his leadership.
