history

National Road 27 in the Tamou Game Reserve

The game reserve was established by a decree dated August 8, 1962 and originally covered an area of 147,000 hectares. New human settlements in the area were prohibited from the beginning, but the drought from 1974 to 1984 resulted in large-scale colonization of parts of the reserve. The settlements were legalized by a decree of August 12, 1976, with which the area of the protected area in the northeast and east was reduced by around 77,000 hectares. In the decades that followed, the proportion of agricultural land in the north-west and north-east of the Tamou Game Reserve rose sharply. The proportion of gallery forests in the entire reserve fell from 9 percent in 1975 to 0.9 percent in 2013.
