Shrub savannah

Bushfire in Burkina Faso

The shrub savannah (also: shrub steppe ) is an ecozone , a zonobiom or a vegetation zone of the tropics , especially the dry tropics , depending on the perspective . This vegetation formation is characterized by the predominant occurrence of shrub vegetation and small gnarled trees with maximum dimensions of ten to fifteen meters as well as high savannah grasses. The shrub savannah mostly settles on areas of long fallow land and is very vulnerable to bush fire .

Characteristic tree species come from the butterfly-like and heather- like orders , such as the Afzelia africana , the Néré tree and the shea tree ( Vitellaria paradoxa ).

The term savannah has been very differentiated since the 1950s . According to the criterion of increasing proportion of trees per unit area, the following rough order is listed: treeless grass savannah, shrub savannah, tree savannah and savanna forest. A savannah forest has at least 50% tree density. In between lies the shrub savannah with a generally lower tree density.
