The grass savannah is a tropical type of vegetation with few or no trees and a closed high grass layer. Other savannah types are characterized by a higher proportion of wood, in steppes the herb layer is lower, more open and less dominated by grasses . Grass savannahs often occur under environmental conditions that prevent the formation of a layer of wood due to waterlogging , poor soil thickness or other factors.
