Afzelia africana is a big one. Deciduous tree that usually reaches heights of up to 15, more rarely up to 30 meters or more. The trunk diameter reaches 50–150 centimeters or more and buttress roots can be formed. Its gray bark is cracked and scaly. The tree carries an aromatic resin .

The up to 32 cm long leaves are arranged alternately and pinnate in pairs, with three to 7 pairs of opposite leaflets . The petiole is 0.5 to 1.5 cm long. The entire, short stalked and bald leaflets are 5 to 15 cm long and 3 to 9 cm wide. They are ovate to obovate or elliptical and rounded to pointed. The stipules are fused with the rhachis in the lower part, the upper parts are sloping.

The legumes, which are brown, flattened, elongated to bulbous, glabrous and woody when ripe are 12 to 18 cm long, 5 to 8 cm wide and 3.5 cm thick. They contain 6 to 12 black, poisonous, ellipsoidal and smooth seeds that are 1.6 to 3 cm in length, 1.1 to 2.1 cm in diameter and an orange, edible, cup-shaped aril .
