Ouro Guélédjo (official spelling; also Ouro Guéladio ) is a rural community in the Say department in Niger .

geography

Ouro Guélédjo lies at the transition from the Sahel to the greater Sudan landscape . South of the village is the Goroubi river bed , a tributary of the Niger . The municipality is divided into 22 administrative villages and 36 hamlets. The main town of the rural municipality is the administrative village of Guéladio (also Guéladjo). Ouro Guélédjo borders the neighboring state of Burkina Faso in the south . The neighboring communities in Niger are Bitinkodji in the north, Say and Tamou in the east and Makalondi and Torodi in the west.

history

There is an archaeological site near Ouro Guélédjo. Iron smelting devices with large, rounded cinder blocks were discovered here.

The place was founded in the second half of the 19th century by the children of Mohamed Guéladio. Mohamed Guéladio was originally from Massina and was banished after losing to the Tukulor . The ruler of Say converted him to Islam and gave him a small domain near Torodi . In 1854 Mohamed Guéladio was invited by Al-Hajj Omar to return to Massina, but he died on the trip. Mohamed Guéladio's children stayed in Say and founded the town of Ouro Guélédjo, which they named after their father.

Ibrahim Guéladio, one of the sons, signed a treaty with Colonel Monteil in 1891, which placed his territory of Ouro Guélédjo under French protectorate , and in 1896 received the French Mission Hourst from Émile Auguste Léon Hourst amicably. He also had close ties with the empire of Bambara .

population

At the 2001 census, Ouro Guélédjo had 19,506 inhabitants. For 2010, 25,813 inhabitants were calculated.

Economy and Infrastructure

The community is located in a zone where rain-fed agriculture is practiced. In the main town there is a weekly market that is held every Friday and is relatively small given the importance of the place. In 2000, the aid organization SOS Sahel International set up a maternity clinic in Ouro Guélédjo and created comprehensive healthcare facilities.
