Torodi is located in the wetlands south of the Niger River at the transition from the Sahel to the Sudan . To the south of the town center is the Goroubi river bed , a tributary of the Niger. The Forêt classée de Faira is an 8,500 hectare protected forest area in the municipality of Torodi. It was placed under protection in 1950.

The municipality is divided into 69 administrative villages, four traditional villages, 202 hamlets and a camp. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village of Torodi. From a geological point of view, the community, located at 184 m above sea level, is located in an area assigned to the Precambrian geological age . Torodi borders the neighboring state of Burkina Faso in the west . The neighboring communities in Niger are Dargol and Namaro in the north, Bitinkodji and Ouro Guélédjo in the east and Makalondi in the south.

history

In 1882 the Fulbe established a manor ( French : chefferie ) in Torodi. In the course of the military occupation of the later Niger colony by France, the place was initially attached to the French colony of Dahomey in 1899 and only later became part of Niger. The French made Torodi a canton in 1902 . 1971, in the independent Niger, the place was raised in addition to the administrative post (French: poste administratif ). As part of a nationwide administrative reform in 2002, the canton of Torodi became the rural municipality of Torodi. Makalondi was separated from the rural municipality of Torodi in 2009 as a separate rural community. The administrative post of Torodi was removed from the Say department in 2011 and elevated to the Torodi department.

population

At the 2001 census, Torodi had 114,518 residents. For 2010, 151,541 inhabitants were calculated. Both statements refer to Torodi including Makalondi. The ethnic groups that have been living in the village for a long time are Fulbe, Zarma and Gourmantché . There are also immigrants from other groups, such as Hausa and residents from the neighboring state of Mali .
