James Tamou (born December 13, 1988 in Palmerston North , New Zealand ) is an Australian rugby league player of New Zealand descent. He plays in the NRL for the Penrith Panthers .

Career

Tamou was born in Palmerston North and started playing rugby with the Levin Knights, a club from Levin , which is about 50 km southwest of Palmerston North. At the age of 13, he and his family moved to Sydney, where he attended Matraville High School in Sydney's eastern suburbs and played rugby for the Paddington Tigers, a junior club of the Sydney Roosters . In 2007 he became part of the Junior Kiwis, the New Zealand U-20 national team.

In 2008 he played for the first time for the Sydney Roosters in the Toyota Cup and took part with the New Zealand Māori in a game against the Indigenous All Stars that served as the prelude to the Rugby League World Cup .

In 2009 he signed a contract with the North Queensland Cowboys , for which he made his debut in Round 9 against the New Zealand Warriors and played 13 games over the course of the season. In 2010 he completed 19 games for the Cowboys and took part with the New Zealand Māori in a game against England , which took place as a preparatory game as part of the Four Nations 2010. He also extended his contract with the Cowboys for three years.

At the beginning of the 2011 season, Tamou and his teammate Blake Leary were suspended from the Cowboys for a game for "breaking the team's drinking rules," which states that alcohol cannot be consumed in the week that a game is played . In the rest of the season he completed 23 games, in which he made an average gain of 108 meters.

In 2012, Tamou made more space per game than any other pillar in the NRL . In April he took part with Australia in the traditional ANZAC test against New Zealand . In May he took part in all three games of the State of Origin Series with New South Wales .

In 2013 he again took part in the ANZAC Test and the State of Origin Series, but was suspended for the second game of the State of Origin Series because he was drunk on June 11 in Townsville and drove a car without a license. With Australia he won the Rugby League World Cup .

In 2014 he took part with the Cowboys in the first edition of the NRL Auckland Nines , where he was elected to the All-Star Team and won the State of Origin Series with New South Wales .

During an NRL game against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs , he injured his neck and was unable to play for a month. He also had to undergo a neck operation, which prevented his participation in the Four Nations .
