A night market or night bazaar is a kind of weekly market that regularly goes into operation in the evening. Night markets can be located in city centers or suburban areas and typically sell food.

The most famous night markets are in China and in areas such as Hong Kong , Macau , Singapore , Malaysia , Taiwan ( night markets in Taiwan ), Thailand (such as Chiang Mai and Hua Hin ) and the Chinatowns all over the world. The larger ones are open and are located in marketplaces , while the smaller ones are mostly informal and have developed independently on streets that are often used.

Night markets tend to be held in North America during a Chinese culture event such as B. the Spring Festival instead. The University of Washington's Taiwan Student Union holds an annual night market in May. This spectacle brings together 2,000 people from the Pacific Northwest of America. In San Francisco there is also such a night market every Saturday in autumn with around 100 stalls . However, there are night markets, such as the night market in Riga , regardless of Chinese culture.

history

The Chinese night markets first appeared in history around the year 836 in the Tang Dynasty , when the emperor Wen Zong ( 文宗 , Wénzōng ) issued rules for them. These markets were only frequented by the less well off Chinese and were mostly located near a red light district.
