The Addis Ababa Stadium ( Amharic አዲስ አበባ ስታዲየም , also known as Ydnekachew Tessema Stadium ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa . It has space for 35,000 spectators.
history
The facility was built in 1940. A major renovation took place in 1999 with a view to hosting the U-21 African Cup of Nations in 2001 . At the tournament organized by the CAF , the host's team took fourth place, qualifying for the junior soccer world championship for the first time .
The Addis Ababa Stadium is located in the center of the city near Legehar Train Station and Meskel Square . International football matches and athletics competitions are held regularly in the stadium. The African Athletics Championships were held here in spring 2008 .
A new national stadium with 60,000 seats has been under construction since January 2016, which will replace the Addis Ababa Stadium. In October 2017, 58 percent of the new building was completed.
