The African Nations Cup 1968 ( Engl. : African Cup of Nations , French. : Coupe d'Afrique des Nations ) was the sixth playout of the African continental championship in football and was held from January 12 to 21 for the second time after 1962 in Ethiopia instead . Organized by the African continental football association Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), eight teams from Algeria , Ethiopia , DR Congo , Ghana , Ivory Coast , Republic of the Congo , Senegal and Uganda took part for the first time.
As in previous years, a qualification to reduce the field of participants took place with a record number of 22 applicants to eight finalists, with the host Ethiopia and defending champion Ghana automatically qualifying
The game was played with two groups of four teams each. The two best teams in each group then played the tournament winner from the semi-finals in the knockout system . With one exception in 1976, this final round format was to last until the 1990 tournament . The final round matches were played in the Addis Ababa Stadium in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa and in the Asmara Stadium in Asmara , now the capital of Eritrea .
The team from the Democratic Republic of the Congo won the tournament and was the first time Africa champions in football.
