The Africa Cup 1976 ( English : African Cup of Nations , French : Coupe d'Afrique des Nations ) was the tenth game of the African continental championship in football and took place from February 29 to March 14 for the third time after 1962 and 1968 held in Ethiopia . Organized by the African continental football federation Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), eight teams again participated in Egypt , Ethiopia , Guinea , Morocco , Nigeria , Sudan ,Uganda and Zaire participated.
As in previous years, there was also a qualification to reduce the field of participants with a record number of 34 applicants to eight finalists, with hosts Ethiopia and defending champions Zaire automatically qualifying.

As usual, the game was played with two groups of four teams each. However, the two best teams in each group did not play the tournament winner in the knockout system as before , but in a final group of everyone against everyone. The final round matches were played in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa in the Addis Ababa Stadium and in Dire Dawa in the Dire Dawa Stadium .
Morocco won the tournament and became African champions for the first time in football.
