The 2001 U-21 African Football Championship was the twelfth edition of the tournament for junior football teams (U-21) in Africa organized by the African Football Association (CAF) . The tournament was held from March 18 to April 1, 2001 in Ethiopia . The winner was Angola by a 2: 0 win over Ghana . The two finalists as well as the losing semi-finalists Egypt and the hosts qualified for the 2001 World Junior Championships in Argentina.

The teams first played a preliminary round in two groups of four teams each. The first two in each group qualified for the semi-finals. If there was a tie, extra time and possibly a penalty shoot-out was played there.

The last preliminary round match between Egypt and Cameroon was canceled when both teams were obviously playing for a draw in order to reach the semi-finals together. Like the game between Ethiopia and South Africa, it was repeated two days later. The winner was second in the group, the result (3: 1 for Egypt) was not included in the rating.

Angola became African champions for the first time with two goals from Loló .
World Championship
Angola , Ghana , Egypt and Ethiopia qualified for the 2001 World Junior Championship in Argentina. There Angola finished its preliminary group ahead of the Czech Republic , Australia and Japan as group winners. In the round of 16, the African champions were eliminated against the Netherlands . The best African nation was Ghana, which was also able to win its group ahead of France , Paraguay and Iran . After victories against Ecuador in the round of 16 and Brazil in the quarter-finals, Ghana prevailed against Egypt in the semi-finals, but lost to the hosts in the final . Egypt had finished their preliminary group in second behind Argentina and was able to prevail in the round of 16 against the USA and in the quarter-finals against the Netherlands. Egypt finished third with a victory over Paraguay. Ethiopia closed the preliminary round behind Costa Rica , Ecuador and the Netherlands in last place.
