The 1989 U-21 African Football Championship was the sixth edition of the African Football Association (CAF) tournament for junior football teams (U-21s) in Africa . The tournament began on April 30, 1988 and ended on January 14, 1988. The winner was Nigeria . The tournament winner qualified together with the defeated finalist Mali for the Junior World Championship in 1989 in Saudi Arabia.

The tournament was played in a knockout system with two legs. In the event of a tie, the away goal rule decided on progress. If there was also a tie, a penalty shoot- out was carried out without extra time .

Nigeria won the second leg for the fourth time in a row with goals from Mutiu Adepoju and Jimoh Balogun .
Result
Nigeria and Mali qualified for the 1989 World Youth Championship in Saudi Arabia. There Nigeria reached behind Portugal and ahead of Czechoslovakia as well as the hosts as group runner-up in the quarter-finals. There the African champions prevailed against the Soviet Union and eliminated the USA on penalties in the semifinals . As in the group stage, Portugal prevailed in the final. Mali was the last in a group with Brazil , the USA and the GDR .
