The U-21 African Football Championship in 1987 was the fifth edition of the tournament for junior football teams (U-21) in Africa organized by the African Football Federation (CAF) . The tournament began on June 14, 1986 and ended on April 18, 1987. The winner was Nigeria . The tournament winner qualified together with the defeated finalist Togo for the Junior World Championship 1987 in Chile.

The tournament was played in a knockout system with two legs. In the event of a tie, the away goal rule decided on progress. If there was also a tie, a penalty shoot- out was carried out without extra time .

Result
Nigeria and Togo qualified for the 1987 World Junior Championship in Chile. There, Nigeria finished last in their preliminary round groups behind Italy , Brazil and Canada , as did Togo behind Yugoslavia , the hosts and Australia .
