The 2009 U-20 African Football Championship was the 16th edition of the tournament for junior football teams (U-20) in Africa organized by the African Football Association (CAF) . The tournament was held in Rwanda from January 18 to February 1, 2009 . The winner was Ghana by a 2: 0 victory over Cameroon . The two finalists and the losing semi-finalists Nigeria and South Africa qualified for the 2009 U-20 World Cup in Egypt.

Ghana became African champions for the third time with two goals from Ransford Osei .
World Championship
Ghana , Cameroon , Nigeria and South Africa qualified for the 2009 U-20 World Cup alongside hosts Egypt . There Ghana finished its preliminary group ahead of Uruguay , Uzbekistan and England as winners. After a victory in the round of 16 against South Africa and a victory in the quarter-finals against South Korea , the African champions were able to prevail against Hungary in the semi-finals . With a win on penalties in the final against Brazil , Ghana became world champions for the first time. Egypt were also group winners ahead of Paraguay , Italy and Trinidad and Tobago , but were eliminated in the round of 16 against Costa Rica . South Africa had finished third behind Hungary and the United Arab Emirates in the preliminary round before losing to Ghana in the round of 16. Nigeria finished third in its preliminary group behind Spain and Venezuela and was eliminated by Germany in the round of 16 . For Cameroon, however, the preliminary round ended in last place behind Germany, South Korea and the USA .
