The 2003 U-21 African Football Championship was the 13th edition of the African Football Association (CAF) tournament for junior football teams (U-21) in Africa . The tournament was held in Burkina Faso from January 4th to 18th, 2003 . The winner was Egypt by a 4: 3 win over the Ivory Coast . The two finalists as well as the losing semi-finalists Mali and Burkina Faso qualified for the 2003 Junior World Championship in the United Arab Emirates.

The teams first played a preliminary round in two groups of four teams each. The first two in each group qualified for the semi-finals. If there was a tie, extra time and possibly a penalty shoot-out was played there.

Egypt had taken the lead in the second minute of play through Ibrahim Emad . The Ivory Coast equalized six minutes later through Romaric . Ahmed Fathy equalized five minutes later when Yaya Touré took the lead in Ivory Coast in the 21st minute . In the 33rd minute, Egypt took the lead again through Hosni Abd-Rabou , and Ivory Coast equalized a minute before André Saki switched sides . After the second half went goalless, the game went into overtime. There Emad decided the day with his second goal.
World Championship
Egypt , Ivory Coast , Mali and Burkina Faso qualified for the 2003 Junior World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. There Egypt finished its preliminary group behind Japan and Colombia in third place and was eliminated in the round of 16 against Argentina . The Ivory Coast finished their group behind Ireland in second place and lost to the USA in the round of 16 . Burkina Faso was able to win its preliminary group ahead of Slovakia , the hosts and Uzbekistan as the winner, and were eliminated in the round of 16 against Canada . Mali finished third behind Argentina and Spain in the preliminary round and was eliminated.
