The 1985 U-21 African Football Championship was the fourth edition of the tournament for junior football national teams (U-21) in Africa organized by the African Football Association (CAF) . The tournament began on September 2, 1984 and ended on May 4, 1985. The winner was Nigeria . The tournament winner qualified together with the defeated finalist Tunisia for the Junior World Championship 1985 in the Soviet Union.

The tournament was played in a knockout system with two legs. In the event of a tie, the away goal rule decided on progress. If there was also a tie, a penalty shoot- out was carried out without extra time .

Result
Nigeria and Tunisia qualified for the 1985 World Junior Championship in the Soviet Union. There, Nigeria finished second in its preliminary group behind the hosts . After beating Mexico in the quarter-finals , the African champions were eliminated in the semi-finals against eventual world champions Brazil . Tunisia only finished last in its preliminary group behind Bulgaria , Colombia and Hungary .
