The 2005 U-20 African Football Championship was the 14th edition of the tournament for junior football teams (U-20) in Africa organized by the African Football Association (CAF) . The tournament was held in Benin from January 14th to 29th, 2005 . The winner was Nigeria with a 2: 0 win over Egypt . The two finalists as well as the losing semi-finalists Benin and Morocco qualified for the Junior World Cup 2005 in the Netherlands.

The teams first played a preliminary round in two groups of four teams each. The first two in each group qualified for the semi-finals. If there was a tie, extra time and possibly a penalty shoot-out was played there.

Nigeria won their fourth African championship with two goals from Isaac Promise .

World Championship

Nigeria , Egypt , Benin and Morocco qualified for the 2005 Junior World Cup in the Netherlands. There, Nigeria finished the preliminary round behind Brazil in second place. After victories in the round of 16 against Ukraine and in the quarter-finals against the hosts , the African champions prevailed against Morocco in the semi-finals. In the final, Nigaria lost to Argentina . Morocco also finished their preliminary group in second place behind Spain . In the second round, the North Africans eliminated Japan and in the quarter-finals Italy . After losing to Nigeria in the semi-finals, Morocco lost to Brazil in their third place match. Egypt finished the preliminary round behind the USA , Argentina and Germany in last place. Benin was third in the group behind the hosts and Japan.
