The 1997 U-21 African Football Championship was the tenth edition of the tournament for junior football national teams (U-21) in Africa organized by the African Football Association (CAF) . The tournament was held in Morocco from March 23rd to April 5th, 1997 . The hosts won with a 1-0 win over South Africa . The two finalists as well as the losing semi-finalists Ghana and Ivory Coast qualified for the 1997 Junior World Cup in Malaysia.

The teams first played a preliminary round in two groups of four teams each. The first two in each group qualified for the semi-finals. If there was a tie, extra time and possibly a penalty shoot-out was played there.

World Championship
Morocco , South Africa , Ivory Coast and Ghana qualified for the 1997 Junior World Cup in Malaysia. There, Morocco moved into second place behind Uruguay , but ahead of Belgium and the hosts in the round of 16, where they were eliminated by Ireland . Ghana finished their preliminary group ahead of Ireland, the USA and China as winners. After beating the United Arab Emirates , Ghana knocked out Japan in the quarterfinals and eliminated Uruguay in the semifinals. South Africa was eliminated in the preliminary round against Brazil and France , the Ivory Coast against England , Mexico and the United Arab Emirates.
