The 2013 U-20 African Football Championship was the 18th edition of the tournament for junior football teams (U-20) in Africa organized by the African Football Association (CAF) . The tournament was held in Algeria from March 16-30, 2013 . The winner was Egypt with a victory on penalties against Ghana . The two finalists as well as the losing semi-finalists Nigeria and Mali qualified for the U-20 World Cup 2013 in Turkey.

The teams first played a preliminary round in two groups of four teams each. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided on the placement. The first two in each group qualified for the semi-finals. If there was a tie, extra time and possibly a penalty shoot-out was played there.

Egypt took the lead in the fourth minute with a penalty from Saleh Gomaa , while Ghana tied for three minutes with a penalty from Jeremiah Arkorful . Thereafter, no more goals were scored and the game was decided on penalties, where Egypt won their fourth title.

World Championship

Egypt , Ghana , Nigeria and Mali qualified for the 2013 U-20 World Cup in Turkey. There, Egypt was eliminated as third in its preliminary group behind Iraq and Chile . Ghana reached the round of 16 as one of the best third party in the group, behind Spain and France . After beating Portugal , Ghana reached the semi-finals through another victory over Chile, but lost to France there. In the game for third place Ghana prevailed against Iraq. Nigeria finished their preliminary group in second place behind Portugal and were eliminated in the round of 16 against Uruguay . Mali finished last in the preliminary round behind Greece , Paraguay and Mexico .
