The 1979 U-21 African Football Championship was the first edition of the tournament for junior football national teams (U-21) in Africa organized by the African Football Association (CAF) . The tournament began on August 6, 1978 and ended on February 25, 1979. The winner was Algeria . The tournament winner qualified together with the defeated finalist Guinea for the Junior World Championships 1979 in Japan.

The tournament was played in a knockout system with two legs. In the event of a tie, the away goal rule decided on progress. If there was also a tie, a penalty shoot- out was carried out without extra time .

Result
Algeria and Guinea qualified for the 1979 World Junior Championship in Japan. There Algeria prevailed in the preliminary round against Mexico and the hosts and reached the quarter-finals as second in the group behind Spain , where they were eliminated from eventual world champions Argentina . Guinea finished their preliminary group without a point or goal behind Uruguay , the Soviet Union and Hungary in last place.
