Qualification for | U-20 soccer world championship |
The U-20 African Nations Cup (. Engl African U-20 Championship ) or Junior African Nations Cup is a soccer tournament between the best teams in Africa for male soccer players under 20; until 2001 under 21 years of age. The competition is organized by the African football association Confédération africaine de football (CAF). It takes place every two years and also serves as a qualifying tournament for the junior (U-20) football world championship, with the best four teams qualifying for the World Cup since 1997 if no African country is the host. In the case of an African host, the fifth best team can still qualify if the host is among the four best teams, e.g. For example, Mali took part in the 1999 World Cup in Nigeria as 5th in the Africa Cup and achieved the best placement of all African teams there as third.
Until 1989, the tournament only served as a qualification for the U-20 World Cup and was played back and forth until the final. Since 1991, a qualifying round has been followed by a tournament of the eight best teams for the title of African U-20 Champion in a selected country.
