The 1983 U-21 African Football Championship was the third edition of the tournament for junior football national teams (U-21) in Africa organized by the African Football Association (CAF) . The tournament began on June 12, 1982 and ended on April 16, 1983. The winner was Nigeria . The tournament winner qualified together with the defeated finalist Ivory Coast for the Junior World Championship 1983 in Mexico.

The tournament was played in a knockout system with two legs. In the event of a tie, the away goal rule decided on progress. If there was also a tie, a penalty shoot- out was carried out without extra time .

Liberia was disqualified, Senegal did not play for the second leg. Ethiopia, Ghana, Central Africa, Mauritius, Congo, Upper Volta and Libya withdrew their teams. All other teams had no play.

Result
Nigeria and the Ivory Coast qualified for the 1983 Junior World Cup in Mexico. There, Nigeria took third place in its preliminary group behind Brazil and the Netherlands . The Ivory Coast finished the group last behind Uruguay , Poland and the USA .
