From 1979 he worked as a freelance painter in Cologne. Charly Pirot was given his nickname “the Cologne van Gogh ” by a former chief secretary of the Wochenspiegel. "The power of his colors reminded her of the painter without an ear."

To get to know the colors better, he spent a week in a castle ruin while on vacation in France, during which time he painted three pictures. For a long time he preferred to paint in nature, often in the north of Cologne. On the way he was on a moped with a specially made trailer, with which he transported painting utensils and provisions. On the occasion of the 120th anniversary of Kaufhof Cologne in 1993, he set up his easel in the shop for a few days and was watched at work.
