The Saint-George Sport Association or Saint-George SA for short ( Amharic ቅዱስ ጊዮርጊስ ) is a football club from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia . The club plays its home games in the Addis Ababa Stadium .
history
The club was founded by Greeks when the Italians invaded the country during the Abyssinian War in 1935. Founded by Ayele Atnash and George Dukas, the association quickly became a symbol of Ethiopia's nationalism and freedom. After the Italians left in 1937, the association turned into a symbol of the identity of many Ethiopians. Since there were no other football clubs in Ethiopia , only foreign clubs were played.
In 1947 the first Ethiopian soccer league was founded, in which three teams competed for the championship. In 1950, Saint-George won the championship for the first time. Two years later they won the Ethiopian Cup for the first time, and in 1953 they defended the title.
In 1967 they took part in the African Cup of Champions Clubs for the first time . Immediately with the first participation they advanced to the semi-finals, which they lost to the eventual winner Tout Puissant Mazembe . This was the first and last time the club reached more than the second round. 1975 succeeded the first entry into the African Cup Winners' Cup , but dropped out of the tournament in the first round. After winning the championship six times in the 1990s, it won the title eight times in the 2000s, and the club has been the uninterrupted titleholder since the 2007/08 season. In November 2007 the club started raising money to build a new stadium. Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi took over 80 percent of the financing of 80 million birr .
In 2017, the club made it to the group stage for the first time in the club's history as part of the 2017 CAF Champions League . In the first two rounds, teams from the Seychelles and the Republic of the Congo were defeated for this. Well -known teams such as Espérance Sportive de Tunis (Tunisia) and Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa) were too strong in the group stage and Saint-George only ended up in third place, tied with the AS Vita Club . Apart from the sporting achievements, the construction of the Yidnekahew Tessema Sport Academy in Bishoftu was successfully completed in the same year . The academy was named after Ydnekachew Tessema , a former player of the club and a multiple national player. As the national coach of Ethiopia, he achieved something unique in the country's football history by winning the Africa Cup in 1962 . He was also President of the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) from 1972 to 1987 . The academy cost around 60 million Birr , is 24,000 hectares in size and should be able to accommodate up to 100 youth players. The academy's facilities include: two soccer fields, a cafeteria, a conference center, changing rooms, a modern medical center, a gym and dormitories.
