The CAF Champions League ( French : CAF Ligue des Champions ) is the most important African club football competition , comparable to the European Champions League , which was held from 1964 to 1996, analogous to the European model, as the African Cup of Champions Clubs ( German : “Africa Cup of National Champions ") and is organized by the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) . The season begins with the first round in January and regularly ends with the finals at the end of October or beginning of November each year.

While the forerunner African Cup of Champions Clubs was played in a pure knockout system , a group phase was introduced with the introduction of the Champions League. In the current mode, two rounds are initially played in a knockout system with a return leg. Then the participants in the quarter-finals are determined in a group stage with four groups of four teams each in the first and second leg. The first and second placed in each group qualify for the renewed knockout phase, which is played back and forth until the final.

The winner of this competition qualifies for the African Supercup and the FIFA Club World Cup .

¹ A play-off was scheduled a month after the second leg, but when Kotoko did not play, probably because they had not been informed by the Ghanaian Association, Mazembe was declared the winner.
