CAF Champions League 2016

The CAF Champions League 2017 , also Total CAF Champions League 2017 due to the sponsorship , was the 21st edition of the CAF Champions League and was organized by the CAF . It began on February 10, 2017 with the preliminary round and ended on November 4, 2017 with the second leg of the final. Defending champion Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa was eliminated in the quarterfinals against the Moroccan club and eventual title winner Wydad Casablanca .

Attendees

All 55 member associations of the CAF are entitled to send teams to the Champions League. Two starting places are automatically reserved for the twelve best national associations in the CAF five-year ranking. For qualification for the Champions League 2017, the evaluation of the years 2011 to 2015 applies. Thus, the number of football associations belonging to the CAF means that a maximum of 67 teams could participate in the Champions League.

Preliminary round

The first legs took place from February 10 to 12, the second legs from February 17 to 19, 2017.

Group stage

In the group stage, four teams compete against each other in four groups in home and return matches. The group winners and runners-up qualified for the quarter-finals, while those placed third and fourth were eliminated from the competition. If two or more teams were tied, the placement was determined by the following criteria:

  1. Number of points in direct comparison
  2. Goal difference in direct comparison
  3. Number of goals in direct comparison
  4. Number of away goals in direct comparison
  5. If, after applying criteria 1 to 4, several teams still occupied the same place in the table, criteria 1 to 4 were reapplied, but only to the matches between the teams in question. Should this also not lead to a definitive placement, criteria 6 to 9 were applied.
  6. Goal difference from all group matches
  7. Number of goals in all group matches
  8. Number of away goals in all group matches
  9. Drawing lots
