The Egyptian Premier League 2016/17 was the 60th season of the Egyptian Premier League , the highest Egyptian championship in football since its inception in 1948/49 . The season began on September 15, 2016 with Aswan SC's game against El Dakhleya , which Aswan SC won 2-0. The season ended on July 17, 2017 with al Ahly Cairo's 2-0 win against al Zamalek SC .
al Ahly Cairo was able to defend his championship title and thus achieve his 38th Egyptian championship title. Ittihad El-Shorta , Haras El-Hodood SC and Ghazl El Mahalla SC have not been represented in Egypt's top division since the previous season . Al Nasr Lel Taa'den SC and El Sharkia SC got promoted from the Egyptian Second Division 2015/16 , reached the last two places and therefore had to relegate again. Only the newcomer Tanta SC could keep the class.

A total of 65 different teams took part in the championship since 1948/49 , but only al Ahly Kairo and al Zamalek SC managed to participate in all championships.
