The Alexandria Stadium ( Arabic إستاد الإسكندرية) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the second largest Egyptian city of Alexandria . The football clubs Al-Ittihad Al-Sakndary , Smouha SC and El Olympi play their home games here. It currently offers 20,000 seats for visitors. The facility is located around three kilometers from Alexandria Airport and five kilometers from the city center.
history
The stadium, which was built in 1929, is considered to be the oldest still existing stadium in the country and all of Africa . It is known as the home of football . The first football game on Egyptian soil took place on the site even before the construction. The Alexandria Stadium is a very extensive stadium area. The track of the athletics facility in front of the grandstand in the north is so extended that it leads far out of the stadium. In the curves, visitors are particularly far removed from the action on the lawn. The northern visitor tier consists of several small, covered grandstands. Alexandria Stadium has hosted major tournaments several times. Since 1974 the Africa Cup has been held in Egypt on May 3 ( 1974 , 1986 , 2006 ) and the Alexandria Stadium was used as a venue for the tournament. For the 2019 tournament , the facility was selected as the venue again and renovated together with the training grounds. So were u. a. the entrances were rebuilt and expanded, the changing rooms modernized and an ice bath for regeneration and a whirlpool installed according to the specifications of the CAF association . As early as 1951 it was the main venue for the 1st Mediterranean Games , such as B. the athletics competitions and as a venue for the football tournament. In addition, the U-17 World Cup 1997 and the U-20 World Cup 2009 took place in the Alexandria Stadium.
