Life and work

Miss America

Carlson, who is of Swedish descent, grew up in Minnesota. She attended Anoka High School, which she graduated from in 1984. She first attracted public attention as a participant in the Miss Minnesota beauty contest, which she won. Following this success, she was voted Miss America in 1989. In 1990 Carlson, who had also studied intermittently at the University of Oxford , received a degree in organizational theory from Stanford University . In the 1990s, she married sports agent Casey Close, with whom she has two children.

TV presenter

In 2000, Carlson got a job as a correspondent for the television station CBS News . In 2002 she co- hosted the Saturday Early Show (with Russ Mitchell ). Since September 2006, Carlson was the co-host of the show Fox & Friends on the Fox News program . The show, which she presented together with Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade , is currently the most popular infotainment show on American breakfast television. In this capacity, Carlson, who, like the majority of the presenters of Fox News, takes pronounced right-wing conservative positions, has repeatedly aroused criticism. In particular, she was often accused of a tendentious style of moderation in favor of the Republican Party and of trying to put left politicians in a bad light: For example, she characterized the Democratic Senator Edward Kennedy in an interview with Bush adviser Dan Bartlett for his rejection of the Iraq War as an “enemy of the United States” who would stand “on the home front” against the United States.

Dismissed from Fox News

In September 2013, she was surprisingly withdrawn from hosting Fox & Friends , for which conflicts with Steve Doocy were blamed, and on June 23, 2016, Fox News separated from Carlson for good. On July 6th of the same year, she sued her former broadcaster for sexual discrimination, particularly against Doocy and broadcaster Roger Ailes : Ailes took revenge on her for not giving in to his sexual advances. After other employees, including Megyn Kelly , joined the allegations against Ailes, Ailes had to vacate his post on July 21, 2016.

On September 6, 2016, it was announced that Fox News reached a settlement with Gretchen Carlson for US $ 20 million.
