The season of the Namibia Premier League 2016/17 should take place from September 2016 to April 2017. After the withdrawal of the longstanding main sponsor MTC Namibia , announced on August 22, 2016, the future of the league was uncertain. The season was canceled in October 2016, as only three instead of the necessary 27 million Namibian dollars in sponsorship money were available.

At the end of March 2017, MTC agreed to continue supporting the league with 15 million Namibian dollars per year. The season should therefore start on May 12, 2017. On June 2, 2017, seven top division clubs called for the dissolution of the NPL and a reorganization, which was decided on August 23, 2017.
