The Jeunesse Sportive de la Saoura , usually called JS Saoura or just JSS for short, is an Algerian football club from Béchar , the capital of the province of the same name . The club currently plays in the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1 and is the southernmost professional club in the country.

Club history

Predecessor clubs (1964 to 2008)

The original club JS Saoura was founded in 1964 and played in the regional leagues of Algeria until it was dissolved in the early 1970s. During this time, the club also produced the striker Mohamed Belbahri , who was signed by MC Oran in 1969 and became one of the best strikers of his generation.

The successor club IRM Béchar played second-rate between 1993 and 1998, and renamed itself to WR Béchar in the early 2000s . WR Béchar in turn broke up to found the new club JS Saoura .

Foundation and career advancement (2008 to 2012)

The club was founded on the basis of the river Oued Saoura or the geographical region Saoura in spring 2008 under the name of the old predecessor club "Jeunesse Sportive de la Saoura" , or "JS Saoura" for short . In its first season (2008/09) the club was able to promptly win the local Ligue Régional I , which allowed the team to participate in the fourth-rate Inter-Régions Division Ouest for the 2009/2010 season .

Also in this league in 2010 under the direction of coach Mohamed Belhafiane the immediate promotion to the third division National Amateur succeeded .

After major investments by club president Mohamed Zerouati, the team quickly managed to take over the leadership position in this league for the 2010/11 season, so that at the end of the season, with a total of only three defeats in 24 games, they were able to make another promotion. By qualifying for Ligue Professionelle 2 2011/12, JS Saoura advanced to become the first club from the southern provinces of the country to make the leap into professionalism. As a result of the professionalization, the club was then obliged to start expanding the Stade 20 Août 1955 in Béchar, which had only held 8,000 spectators.

For the 2011/12 season, Abdellah Mecheri, a new coach, was hired to replace Mohamed Belhafiane, who had been in office since it was founded. After he was released after two months, Belhafiane was again entrusted with the role of coach. Under him, JS Saoura was able to build on the sporting success again. The team reached second place in the table, behind CA Bordj Bou Arréridj , equivalent to promotion to the highest Algerian league, the Ligue Professionnelle 1 .

With four ascents in a row since the club was founded, they set a national record.

First class (since 2012)

In the summer of 2012, the club signed two foreign players for the first time: Ivorian Josué Alex Aguie and Malian Sekou Bagayoko . In addition, the club's management decided to hire an experienced coach in Chérif Hadjar , but the previous coach Belhafiane was retained as an assistant in the coaching staff. The debut season 2012/13 in the first division could finally finish with ninth place.

For the new season, the JSS announced the engagement of the coach Abdelkader Amrani , who, however, resigned his position after the first league game in August 2013. He was followed by the sports scientist Dr. Ali Mechiche , who was replaced in December 2013 by Frenchman Alain Michel , the club's first foreign coach. With him you ended the season again in the new place.

After the top performer and captain Kadour Beldjilali was sold to Étoile Sportive du Sahel in Tunisia in July 2014 and some other key players had left the club, it became increasingly difficult for the team to continue their usual performances. After four more coach changes, the team was finally able to reach the 13th and last non-relegation place in the 2014/15 season. Bernard Simondi , who was signed up in July 2015, was relieved of his position as head coach on October 3rd. He was followed by assistant coach Karim Khouda on an interim basis. When he resigned in April 2016, Abdelkader Gourari, also previously assistant coach, was appointed the new coach. With him, the team remained unbeaten at home in the 2015/16 season and was able to secure second place in the table and thus qualify for the CAF Champions League for the first time .

The venue of JS Saoura is the Stade 20 Août 1955 in Béchar , which opened in 1953 and originally had 8,000 spectators. After several renovations between 2011 and 2013, at a cost of more than one million euros, the stadium now has around 21,000 seats.
