The Oued Saoura is a river in the western Algerian Sahara , whose river valley forms the western border of the western Great Erg . It forms the river system that penetrates farthest south into the Sahara from the Atlas Mountains . There are a number of oases in its valley. The river gave the name to the entire western part of the Algerian Sahara as the name of a province until it was divided into the provinces of Adrar , Bechar and Tindouf .
course
The valley of the Oued Saoura has its origin at the confluence of the Oued Guir and Oued Zousfana four kilometers north of Igli . Its valley runs relatively straight in a south-south-east direction. It connects the oasis towns there one after the other, first at kilometer 60 Béni Abbès , followed by Tamtert (kilometer 107), El Ouata (kilometer 116.5), Béni Ikhlef (kilometer 163), Kerzaz (kilometer 187), Timoudi (kilometer 222), Ouled Khoudir (km 233) and Ksabi (km 260). In the lower reaches of the Oued Saoura from kilometer 275 in a right bend circles the chain of the Ougarta mountains that separate it from Sebkha el Melah and then flows into this outflowless lake from the southeast. The kilometers 267 to 285 at the bend of the valley are in the province of Adrar.
At the southernmost point of this bend of the Oued Saoura, a sandy dry valley branches off at Foum el Kheneg , which resumes the original direction of flow of the Oued Saoura before the bend. This junction, located 320 meters high, is the starting point of the Oued Messaoud . If the basin of the currently outflow-free Sebkha el Melah was once filled with water to this level in earlier times, it would have had a drain over the Oued Messaoud.
The entire length of the national road 6 accompanies the Oued Saoura to Talkehre and connects the oasis towns mentioned above.
