The Western Great Erg (also known as the Western Sand Sea , French Grand Erg Occidental ) is an Erg , that is, a sand sea in the Sahara , in northern Algeria and the second largest after the Eastern Great Erg . It lies south of the Monts des Ksour and the Sahara Atlas , to the west is the Hammada du Guir .

It stretches for about 600 km from Béni Abbès and Timoudi in the southwest to Laghouat and Ghardaia in the northeast, its width is about 250 km. The western Great Erg is roughly outlined in the west and northwest by national road 6 , or by Oued Zousfana and Oued Saoura , in the east by national road 1 and in the south by national road 51 . The area in between is deserted and there are no villages or roads.
