The Sahara Atlas ( Arabic الأطلس الصحراوي, DMG al-Aṭlas aṣ-ṣaḥrāwī ) is a mountain range of about 950 kilometers in Morocco and Algeria belonging to the Atlas Mountains in North Africa . It forms a northern border of the Sahara .
To the north of it lies the highlands of the Schotts , while to the south of it only desert is to be found. To the east of it lies the Aurès and to the west it is bounded by the Moroccan mountain ranges High Atlas and Djebel Sarhro .
Due to its proximity to the desert, it is only life- and settlement-friendly where there is water in the form of oases or the sometimes water-bearing desert rivers, the wadis . The city of El Djelfa with around 235,000 (2005) inhabitants is the only larger city located directly in the mountains at an altitude of over 1,100 meters. It is an important trading hub for the nomads and semi-nomads of the Sahara. Few other cities can be found at its foot.
The highest peak of the Sahara Atlas is the Djebel Aïssa with a height of 2,236 meters above sea level. It is located in the Ksour Mountains in the western half of the Sahara Atlas. Occasionally the Aurès Mountains east of the Sahara Atlas are also included in the Sahara Atlas, in this case the highest peak of the Aurès at 2328 m , the Djebel Chélia , is also the highest in the Sahara Atlas.
