The Aurès ( Tifinagh script ⵉⴷⵓⵔⴰⵔ ⵏ ⴰⵡⵔⴰⵙ Idurar n Awras ; French often Les Aurès 'the wild' ) is a mountain range in northeast Algeria , the eastern foothills of which extend to Tunisia .

location

The Aures Mountains south of the located on the Mediterranean coast along pulling Tellatlas and east of the Saharan Atlas . The highest point is the Djebel Chélia with a height of 2328  m . The most important river is the Oued Abiod . The main town of the region is the approximately 1050  m high town of Batna with a population of around 300,000 . In the wilder center and in the south of the Aurès there are only small villages.

climate

In winter there can be snowfalls and night frosts; During the day, however, temperatures usually rise again to 10 to 15 ° C. The summer day temperatures can reach 40 ° C and more; At night, however, it cools down noticeably, depending on the cloudiness.

economy

Until the 20th century, a large part of the population lived on agriculture as a self-sufficient source. While agriculture was predominantly practiced on the gently sloping slopes in the north of the Aurès, in the rugged areas in the center and in the south of the mountains sheep and goats - also in the form of semi-nomadism ( transhumance ) - were in the foreground.

population

Various Berber tribes live in the Aurès , whose culture corresponds in many ways with the Berber traditions of Morocco. They are known as chaouis ; they call themselves Icawiyen ( ⵉⵛⴰⵡⵉⵢⵏ ). Their language is related to that of the Rif Berber. Every spring, a fertility festival is held with the Abdaoui dance.

Attractions

The rugged mountain landscape of the Aurès is extremely impressive. Earlier, the houses mixed with small stones were rammed built; Today, however, they are mostly made of hollow blocks , are plastered and whitewashed white or colored.
