Batna ( Arabic باتنة, DMG Bātina , tamazight ⴱⴰⵜⵏⴰ Batna , chaouia ⵜⴱⴰⵟⴻⵏⵜ Tbaṭent ) is a city in northeast Algeria with around 292,943 inhabitants (as of 2008). It is located in the province of the same name, Batna , of which it is the capital. About 40 kilometers east lie by the UNESCO for World Heritage appointed ruins of Timgad . Batna University is in town .
history
In 1844 France established a military base there to control the area between the Sahara and the Atlas Mountains . A few years later, in 1848, people settled near the base. The newly founded city was called Nouvelle Lambese . A year later it was renamed Batna.
