The Tellatlas (also Little Atlas ; Arabic الأطلس التلي, DMG al-Aṭlas at-tallī ) is a mountain range of over 1000 kilometers in Morocco , Algeria and Tunisia belonging to the Atlas Mountains in North Africa , which lies directly on the Mediterranean Sea . Its highest peak, the Lalla Khadîdja , reaches a height of 2308  m and is therefore - after the Djebel Chélia in the Aurès Mountains - the highest point in northern Algeria.

location

The Tell Atlas is enclosed to the north by the Mediterranean Sea and south by the Schotts highlands . Due to a promontory, the Mediterranean also forms the eastern border in Tunisia, while to the west it is replaced by the other Rif and Middle Atlas mountain ranges in Morocco.

Rivers

Most of Algeria's rivers, including the Oued Medjerda , the Oued Rhumel and the Oued Tafna, have their source in the Tell Atlas .

Cities

At the foot of the mountain range are many large cities, such as the Algerian capital Algiers with around 2,200,000 inhabitants or Oran with 770,000 inhabitants. In the mountains themselves are the cities of Constantine (500,000) and Sidi bel Abbès (230,000).

history

At the time of the French occupation of Algeria (1830–1962), the Tell Atlas was a retreat for many freedom fighters .
