The Medjerda ( Arabic مجردة Medscherda , DMG Maǧarda , in antiquity Bagradas ) is Tunisia 's longest river with 450 km, which carries water all year round.

The Medjerda rises in northeast Algeria and reaches the Algerian-Tunisian border at Ghardimaou . From there it flows along a stretch via Jendouba , Bou Salem , south of Beja , Medjez el-Bab and Utica into the Mediterranean .

The Medjerda feeds more than half of Tunisia's national water supply . In addition, the most productive agricultural area in Tunisia is in the Medjerda Valley .

In the year 255 BC The Battle of the Bagradas took place on the right bank of the river during the First Punic War .
