Bou Salem ( Arabic بوسالم, DMG Būsālim ) is a Tunisian city in the Jendouba governorate with 21,638 inhabitants (as of 2014). The city is surrounded by several villages such as La Redhauna, Dzira, Touatiya, Somran, El Mina or Balta. In Roman times, Bou Salem was the imperial property of the Saltus Burunitanus. An important Latin inscription was found three kilometers from the present agglomeration. It shows the settlers of the imperial property requesting the Emperor Commodus to complain about the bribery of the procurator of the estate, the peasants and the violence of the soldiers. Until 1966 the city was called Souk El Khemis (German "Thursday market") because a big weekly market was organized there in the past. It is located on the territory of the Ouled Bou Salem tribe, which borders the territory of the Berbers of Kroumirs.
