Jendouba ( Arabic جندوبة Ǧandūba , DMG Dschandūba ), until 1966 Souk El Arba ( Arabic سوق الأربعاء), is a city in northwestern Tunisia . It is located about 150 kilometers west of Tunis and 50 kilometers from the Algerian border and has around 45,000 inhabitants. The city is located in one of the most fertile regions of Tunisia, the Medjerda valley , and is the capital of the Jendouba governorate of the same name .
history
The core of the city began to expand around a small train station before the French protectorate was established at the end of the 19th century. It first developed north of the rails and gradually spread to the south. The old name, Souk El Arba , comes from the town's Wednesday market.
There are also numerous ancient ruins in the region, such as the nearby Bulla Regia excavation , about eight kilometers northwest of the city.
Culture and infrastructure
At the Bulla Regia archaeological site there is a small museum which mainly exhibits excavations from the area.
The most important events in Jendouba are the Festival de Bulla Riga and the Festival de la médina de Jendouba .
The city is home to the Université de Jendouba and three secondary schools: the Lycée Nouvel Ère , the Lycée Khemaïs Elhajri and the Lycée 9 avril .
economy
The region around Jendouba lives mainly from agriculture . Industry is also an employer in the region through a sugar factory, among other things.
Sports
Jendouba is home to the sports club Jendouba Sports , which was founded in 1922 and plays in the 2nd Tunisian league (as of the 2011/2012 season). The club plays at the Municipal de Jendouba stadium .
